After nearly 17 months' struggle, the Syrian rebels finally achieved some gains and caused heavy losses to the Assad regime. Syrian's deputy head of the armed forces and Assad's brother-in-law were killed in a suicide attack. The news not only brought relief for the Syrian people, it also made Chinese netizens very hopeful.

One netizen in China wrote, "Assad is about to collapse. I'm so happy today…wish he dies soon."

In response to the international community's calling on Assad to step down himself, some netizens wrote, "Whoever understands the situation is a wise man; whoever is popular with the people wins the world. One should step down when it's time to step down, leaving with safety and dignity is great news for the Syrian people."

Quite a number of people wrote optimistically, "Hopefully when we wake up tomorrow morning, the Assad regime will have already collapsed."

Some people even waited up all night, hoping to see a headline that the Assad regime had collapsed.

In the year and half long conflict between the Assad regime and the rebels, the regime has attacked unarmed people with cannons, tanks, and helicopters.
